A typical solar water heating system generally consists of two main components, a collector and a storage tank. The collector collects the energy emitted from the sun, and converts it to heat. The storage tank is used to store the water which gets heated by the collector.

To transfer the heat from the collector, water is circulated through the collector back to the storage tank. This circulation of water can be done either by a pumped system, where water is forced through the collector by means of a small pump, or circulation can be achieved naturally with a thermo siphon system, where the correct placing of collector and storage tank can allow circulation by the fact that hot water rises, and colder water drops.

Both systems work very efficiently, and each has their respected application.
